Off to Newbury
Today I’m working with a new client in Newbury. Im providing one of my favourite sessions covering Parent and Family First Aid. Guaranteed a keen audience and a fun course to teach.
A busy week ahead
So tomorrow I’m heading into London to provide training for occupational health Doctors and Nurses. I never enjoy the drive but its great when I’m there. Im doing more teaching than clinical next week so a nice change ahead.

The future
What a night! Boris is back in and Brexit will happen.
Today I am sat at The University of Reading providing medical cover for their graduation ceremonies. I’m watching hundreds of students graduate and thinking what is the future for them.
If Boris can do what he says then it will be great, I’m not sure about the building of 40 new hospital and how he will achieve that, if he does it will be legendary. One of the biggest problems in hospital is capacity, you can throw as much money as you want into the NHS but if you haven’t got the physical beds and space you can’t do anything with it.
The same goes with the new Police Officer, I recently had a catch up with a good friend and senior officer in Thames Valley Police. He said the officers will be great followed by…. The problem is what are they going to drive? What equipment are they going to use? What space do we have for them? The issue being will the funds be made for everything the new officers need to do their job.
I’m keen to the what Boris is going to do, if he can come up with the goods and do what he says it will be a great start but we have had promises before….

Emergency Asthma Inhaler in School
From 1 October 2014 UK schools will be allowed to purchase a salbutamol inhaler without a prescription for use in emergencies when a child with asthma cannot access their own inhaler.
This guidance will give schools that choose to keep an emergency inhaler the basis to create a policy or protocol for using it. The following link can be used to download the guidance.

New advice for dealing with a Choking Baby
St John Ambulance, the British Red Cross and St Andrew’s First Aid have recently updated their advice on dealing with infant choking – after the results showed that although over half (58 per cent) of parents feel confident dealing with basic first aid such as cuts, bruises and burns, a staggering 57 per cent said they would struggle to deliver first aid for more serious incidents including choking.
The new technique involves placing the baby face down along the thigh while an adult strikes the child’s back. Experts say this gives the infant more support compared with previous advice, which was to place the baby along the adult’s arm.

“If there is still a blockage then turn the infant onto their back and give up to five chest thrusts. Use two fingers, push inwards and upwards against their breastbone.
“If the obstruction does not clear after three cycles of back blows and chest thrusts, call for an ambulance and continue until help arrives.”
For an older child, the advice is to bend them forward and give up to five blows between the shoulder blades with the heel of your hand. Check their mouth and if choking persists, stand behind the child put your arms around them and put one fist between the navel and the bottom of their breastbone.

New Course!! Managing Medical Conditions in Schools and Early Years Settings.
Managing medical conditions in School and Early Years Setting is now a regular activity for staff. This course will assist in providing best practice in managing the conditions and carrying out procedures when required.
Statutory guidance was issued to schools on Thursday 15th May by the Government following its landmark decision last year to amend the Children and Families Act so that from September schools in England will be legally required to provide the high quality support children with medical conditions need.
The guidance for the new law is statutory and sets out the practical support schools will be expected to provide to support children with medical conditions, such as making sure they have individual healthcare plans in place and training and support for school staff.
The charities, who form the Health Conditions in Schools Alliance, represent over a million children with health needs. They called for this legal protection as under the current system while many schools already offer excellent support for children with health conditions, there are too many examples where children with health needs are prevented from meeting their full educational potential as a result of ill health, bullying, and stigma at school.
Some children also face discrimination in relation to school trips and extra-curricular activities, this can mean they are effectively excluded from leading a full and active school life. In addition, some schools fail to support the social and emotional implications associated with various medical conditions.

- Developing and using a Care Plan
- Best practice with administering medicines
- CPR and use of a Defibrillator
- Anaphylaxis and use of a Epi Pen, JEXT Pen and Auto injectors
- Epilepsy and use of Buccal Midazolam
- Diabetes and Management
- Asthma and use of Inhalers
- Any other topics required
